The saffron of sacrifice: Why Jauhar can't be understood without Chittor's Saka

Jauhar did not stand alone. It was followed by the kesariya sortie of men who rode through the gates of their crumbling forts knowing they would not return. Chittor faced this terrible cycle of fire within and swords beyond three times, in 1303, 1535 and 1568.
